This project uses both video and social engaged art to spotlight the racial discrimination of asian identities. The video documentary interviews two subjects who share their experience as a visual minority in a vastly white neighborhood. Through their hardships both as a minority and first/second generation immigrant, the subjects express the pride in representing their culture and community. Additionally, the socially engaged artwork is a menu that collects my personal recommendations of asian foods around Ontario. The objective of this piece in relation to the video is to educate and familiarize others on the different asian identities. By making food the center of conversation, people can easily grasp and identify the cuisines that correlate to each country. Additionally, there is a section towards the end of the menu where spectators themselves can recommend their favorite places to dine, which makes it truly a collaborative, physical “Yelp” suggestion system.
