Our artwork is inspired by the performance artwork titled “Couple in the Cage” by Guillermo Gómez-Peña
and Coco Fusco. In this performance, they created a social experiment documentary in which they
pretended to be “authentic people from Guatinaui” on display. In the documentary, there were mixed
reactions from the crowd as some people believed that the “Guatinaui people” were real while others
believed they were not.
In our version, we wanted to create an artwork that was not a performance, but something else that
would have a better impact on the audience as well as teach them that Indigenous culture is more than
just a display. We have decided to create a newspaper cover.
